How to Store & Prep Snow Equipment for the Off-Season

By June, that pusher box has been sitting behind the shop for two months, and it'll sit there for four more. Heat swells the hoses. Humidity gets into every seam it can find. A hinge pin that looked fine in March comes out orange in October, and now you're calling a parts line the week before your first storm instead of running a route.

Winter equipment storage isn't a task you knock out in an afternoon and forget. It's the difference between rolling out ready in November and losing your first weekend to repairs.

The "Zero-Tolerance" Storage Plan: Moving From the Field to the Yard Without Losing Parts

Road salt is the real enemy here, not summer weather. Salt residue sits on metal all summer, pulling in moisture and eating through paint and bare steel long before the temperature drops. Power wash every attachment before it goes into storage, and don't just hit the obvious surfaces. Get up under the moldboard, into the wing hinges, around the shoe brackets. If you can't get a hose in there, it's exactly where corrosion starts.

Once it's clean and fully dry, do a walk-around inventory. Check every pin, bolt, and cotter key, and tag anything that's loose or missing so it's not a surprise in the fall. A cheap anti-corrosion spray on bare metal takes ten minutes and saves you a repaint next spring.

Electrical Preservation: Batteries and StormVision Boxes

Batteries left connected all summer will bleed down and sulfate, and a sulfated battery is a dead battery come plowing season. Pull them or put them on a maintainer. Clean the terminals and coat them with dielectric grease before you walk away.

If your fleet runs StormVision, moisture is the actual threat, not the heat. Check that housing seals are intact before storage and keep the units somewhere dry rather than out in a damp shed where condensation can build up inside the casing over a humid summer. A wireless box that's failed from moisture intrusion is a much more annoying fix than a dead battery.

Greasing for the Long Haul: Why Over-Greasing Actually Works

Most operators think of greasing as a wear-prevention job. During storage, it's a moisture-displacement job. Pumping fresh grease into every zerk fitting until it purges the old grease out pushes any water that's worked its way into the pivot points out with it. Skip this step and that trapped moisture sits against bare metal all summer, doing exactly what you'd expect.

Do it right before storage, not the week you plan to pull the equipment back out. A pivot point that's seized over the summer is a much bigger job than the five minutes it would've taken to grease it properly in May.

Space-Saving Hacks: Stacking Pusher Boxes and Wing Plows

Pusher boxes stack reasonably well cutting-edge down on a pallet or blocking, which keeps weight off the moldboard and frees up floor space. Wing plows are a different story. Their hinges and cylinders don't hold up to being stacked directly on top of each other, so give them their own rack or A-frame stand instead of piling them.

Whatever system you use, label it. A yard full of unmarked attachments in October is how crews waste a morning hunting for the right plow instead of loading it.
