How to Maximize the Lifespan of Your Hydraulic Wing Plow

A hydraulic wing plow earns its keep during the hardest part of the year. It works through freezing temperatures, road salt, packed snow, hidden curbs, and long shifts. Once winter ends, however, the hydraulic system is often parked and ignored until the next storm season approaches.

That is when avoidable problems begin.

Good hydraulic wing plow maintenance is not complicated, but it does require attention throughout the year. Clean fluid, protected cylinders, sound hoses, and occasional system cycling can prevent many of the leaks, slow movements, and hydraulic failures that show up during preseason testing.

Why Hydraulics Fail in the Off-Season

Hydraulic components do not stop aging just because the plow is not moving. Moisture, contamination, heat, and long periods of inactivity can all affect seals, hoses, couplers, valves, and cylinder surfaces.

After winter, salt and moisture may remain around hose fittings, cylinder ends, and electrical connections. If the plow is stored without being thoroughly washed and inspected, corrosion can continue throughout spring and summer.

Warm weather creates its own issues. Repeated temperature changes can cause air inside the reservoir to expand and contract, increasing the opportunity for moisture to enter the system. Rubber seals that sit in one position for months may also dry, harden, or stick.

Before storing the plow:

  • Wash away salt, sand, and chemical residue.

  • Inspect hoses and fittings for wet spots, cracks, rust, or abrasion.

  • Repair active leaks instead of topping off the reservoir.

  • Clean and protect electrical connectors.

  • Grease pins, hinges, pivots, and other specified lubrication points.

  • Cap disconnected hydraulic lines and couplers to keep dirt and moisture out.

A small leak in May is easier and cheaper to address than a failed hose during the first major snowfall.

Fluid Health: Use the Right Viscosity and Cycle the System

Hydraulic fluid does more than transfer force. It also lubricates parts, carries heat, protects against wear, and helps keep internal components clean.

Always use the hydraulic fluid specified by the equipment or power-unit manufacturer. Snow plow hydraulics must operate in temperatures where general-purpose fluid may become too thick. Fluid that does not flow properly in cold weather can cause sluggish wings, delayed response, pump strain, cavitation, and erratic operation.

Do not choose fluid by color alone. Confirm the required specification, viscosity range, and compatibility before mixing or replacing products. If the fluid appears cloudy, milky, unusually dark, or contaminated with debris, the system may need more than a simple top-off.

It is also smart to operate the hydraulic system periodically during the off-season. About once a month, connect the plow safely and cycle the wings and other hydraulic functions through their normal range of motion. This circulates fluid, coats internal surfaces, moves seals, and helps prevent valves from sticking.

While cycling the system, watch for:

  • Uneven or jerky movement

  • Wings that drift after being positioned

  • Unusual pump noise

  • Foaming in the reservoir

  • Slow response

  • New leaks around fittings or cylinder seals

Follow the product manual and equipment safety procedures whenever operating or servicing the plow.

Protecting the Rams From Chrome Pitting

The polished chrome rod on a hydraulic cylinder must pass through a tight seal every time the wing moves. Rust, scratches, and pitting on that surface can cut the seal and introduce contamination into the cylinder.

Whenever possible, store the plow with hydraulic cylinder rods fully retracted. Retraction protects more of the chrome surface inside the cylinder barrel, where it is less exposed to moisture, dirt, and accidental damage.

If part of a rod must remain exposed, clean it carefully and apply a manufacturer-approved protective coating. Do not use abrasive tools that may scratch the chrome.

Store the plow indoors, dry, and off the ground when possible. Avoid locations where roof runoff, lawn irrigation, fertilizer, or corrosive chemicals can reach the hydraulic components.

During storage inspections, look closely for:

  • Small rust spots

  • Flaking chrome

  • Scratches or impact marks

  • Oil collecting around the rod seal

  • Bent rods

  • Damage around the cylinder mounts

Minor surface corrosion can turn into a seal-destroying pit if it is left through the summer.

Simple Fixes vs. Major Hydraulic Overhauls

Some wing plow troubleshooting and repair work can be handled by a properly equipped maintenance team. Other problems require hydraulic testing, specialized tools, welding, or component rebuilding.

A straightforward hose replacement may be reasonable when the failed hose is easy to identify, pressure has been safely relieved, the correct replacement is available, and the system can be kept clean during installation. Replace damaged abrasion guards and route the new hose away from pinch points and sharp edges.

Stop and call a service professional when you find:

  • Repeated hose failures in the same location

  • Metal contamination in the hydraulic fluid

  • A bent or heavily pitted cylinder rod

  • Internal cylinder bypass

  • Wings that move at different speeds

  • A pump that overheats or repeatedly loses pressure

  • Cracked mounts, damaged framing, or distorted pivot points

  • Electrical or diverter-valve issues that mimic hydraulic failure

Replacing parts without diagnosing the cause can turn one failure into several. A hose that keeps bursting may be a symptom of improper routing, pressure spikes, restricted flow, a damaged valve, or structural movement.
