How to Audit Your Fleet for Maximum Trade-In Value
The plow that finishes its last push in March is worth more than the same plow sitting in the back lot in August. Not because steel depreciates that fast, but because nobody touches it in between. Salt keeps eating, seals keep drying, and the small problems you could've documented and fixed for a few hundred bucks turn into the reasons a dealer knocks $4,000 off your trade-in offer.
Post-season snow equipment maintenance isn't really about this year. It's about what your fleet is worth in two or three years when you decide to upgrade. A wing plow with a clean service history and zero rust bloom on the moldboard trades like a low-mileage truck. One with crusted couplers and "we greased it when we remembered" trades like scrap with paperwork.
Here's how to run the audit while the season is still fresh.
Stop the Rust Before It Starts: Salt Neutralization for Hydraulic Wing Plows
Power washing isn't enough. Most contractors blast the visible slush off, see bare paint, and call it clean. The salt that kills equipment isn't the stuff you can see. It's the residue packed into pivot points, behind wear plates, inside the slide boxes, and around every hydraulic fitting on the plow.
Plain water dilutes salt. It doesn't neutralize it. The chloride that stays behind in crevices pulls moisture out of the air all summer and keeps corroding, even with the plow parked indoors. So the wash order matters:

Hot water first, high pressure, to break loose the packed grime. Get behind the moldboard, inside the wing hinges, and around cylinder mounts where slush compacts.

Salt neutralizer second. A dedicated chloride neutralizer (or at minimum a wash with baking soda solution) chemically kills what the water missed. Spray it on, let it dwell ten minutes, rinse.

Dry it, then grease everything. Fresh grease pushed through every zerk forces water out of pins and bushings. Old grease holds salt against the metal, which is worse than no grease at all.

Hit bare metal with a corrosion inhibitor. Scratches, chipped paint on the frame, exposed cylinder rods. Fluid film or a comparable coating buys you six months of protection for ten minutes of work.
One more thing on cylinders: retract them fully before storage. Exposed chrome pits over the summer, and pitted rods chew through seals the first week of next season. That's a hydraulic system maintenance failure you can prevent for free.
The 50-Point Wear Part Inspection
You don't need all 50 points listed here, but you need the categories, and you need to actually write down what you find. The inspection serves two jobs at once. It builds your repair list for the off-season, when parts are in stock and your mechanic isn't working a storm. And it produces the condition report that becomes your negotiating leverage at trade-in time.
Work through the plow in this order:
Cutting edges. Measure remaining edge height at the center and both ends. Uneven wear usually means a shoe height problem, not an edge problem, so fix the cause before you order steel. Hydraulics. Every hose, every fitting, every cylinder. You're looking for weeping seals, chafed jackets, corrosion at the crimps. Check the diverter valve wiring while you're in there; corroded coil connectors cause more "mystery" wing problems than failed pumps do. Pull a fluid sample. Milky means water intrusion, and water in the system over a summer of sitting will cost you a pump.
Structure. Frame welds, moldboard skin thickness, push arm condition. Surface rust is cosmetic. Rust scale flaking off a weld is not. Mark anything questionable with paint pen and photograph it.
The whole wing plow inspection takes maybe 90 minutes per unit done right. Most shops skip it because nothing's broken in April. That's exactly the point. April is when nothing's broken yet.
Documenting for the Future: Why a Maintenance Manual Raises Resale Value

Pull your repair spend per unit for the season.
